Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch painter who was born in 1853. He had several other jobs including preaching and dealing in art before he dedicated his life to painting at the age of 27.
Vincent suffered from mental illness for much of his life, struggling with his love life and his finances. It was only after his death that his art became known and recognised, some of his pieces selling today for over $50 million.
Van Gogh of course is also famous for cutting of his ear after an argument with a friend, then taking it to a brothel and handing it to a prostitute. He was committed to an asylum shortly after this incident in 1890.
Van Gogh shot himself in the chest at the age of 37, although no gun was ever found. He died two days later on 29th July 1890.
